But who needs reservations when you have stealth and a sense of adventure? Your mission: conduct an actual tea party amidst the garden’s lush greenery — complete with actual tea and snacks — but here’s the catch: you’ve got to do it on the down-low. Set up your clandestine feast in the most charming spot in the gardens you can find, and take a photo of your team enjoying tea and finger foods like sneaky nobles on the run. We're looking for extra elegance, silent pinky-raising, and managing to look as inconspicuous as possible while sipping your tea in broad daylight. Just remember, in the world of stealth tea, it’s all about style, subtlety, and having absolutely no reservations!

Springer's Point, once home to wild pirate parties, is now a peaceful nature preserve where visitors can trod along wooded trails to the soundfront, which overlooks the infamous Teach's Hole, the name for the waters where Blackbeard met his demise. This land is calling for your crew to step back in time and embrace your inner buccaneers. Your mission? Dress up as the fiercest (or silliest) pirates this side of the Outer Banks and take an ‘artistic’ group photo amongst the natural beauty of Springer's Point with the infamous waters of Teach's Hole behind you. Capture the majesty of the of the natural splendor while striking a pose worthy of a pirate legend. Your photo should make Blackbeard himself tip his hat and say, ‘Arrr, now that's a crew worthy of the high seas!’ Don’t forget: creativity and pirate swagger are key!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: find an OBX restaurant with a classic menu board, work your charm, and convince the staff to rearrange the letters on one line to read ‘BXBOBX Combo’ and whatever price works with their setup. Whether they think it’s a secret menu item or the latest hot deal, it’s up to you to make it happen! Capture the glorious result in a photo and remember that we'll be looking for creativity, smooth talking, and not getting banned from the restaurant. After all, the BXBOBX Combo is a once-in-a-lifetime (or never-in-a-lifetime) special! I will just point out that the letter kits that came with the menu boards usually only came with one 'X' so ... what will you do?

Your mission: track down all 13 U.S. Post Offices in OBX from Avon to Wanchese (or is it from Corolla to Ocracoke?) and take a picture of your team in front of each one. That’s right — 13 glorious opportunities to strike a pose like you're about to deliver the most important letter of your life. Every post office you find is worth 5 points, so gather your team and start snapping! Possible 65 points total. Rain or shine, your journey through postal history awaits!

Item 24 - The Outer Banks Flying Mustang Adventure

Time for your team to take flight, well, sort of! Scattered throughout the Outer Banks are the elusive Winged Horses from the 2003 Centennial of Flight celebration. Once, there were 99 of these beauties, but now, only around 30 remain in public — and not all of them still have their beautiful wings! Your mission is to track down these rare winged wonders, snap a photo of your team with each one, and earn 5 points per winged horse. Remember, if it doesn’t have wings, it doesn’t count! And here’s the kicker: the team that corrals the most Winged Horse photos will snag an extra 10 bonus points. So, saddle up, get ready to soar, and may the wind (and wings) be ever in your favor!

Item 26 - Celebrating the OG Snowbirds

What few people realize when they spot a pod of dolphins swimming by is that they are likely viewing the same group of dolphins, day after day and year after year. Some bottlenose dolphins will spend their summers in the north and then migrate south to the Outer Banks for the winter only to return again the next year. This migration has led some people to call them the "Retirees of the Sea." Well, we think it's time to throw a beachside bash for these retirees! Your team’s mission is to set up a mini retirement party on the beach as the dolphins cruise by. Capture the festivities on video, with your team raising a toast to these seasoned travelers of the deep. Actual dolphins need to be seen in the video during your festivities. Channel your creativity! After all, these dolphins have earned their relaxation time, and so have you!

For this one, we're asking your team to go stand at the edge of the world. Well, not quite, but as close as you can get and still be on the Outer Banks! Pack up your team and head to the end of the Rodanthe Pier, the easternmost point in North Carolina, where you’ll be so far east, you might just spot tomorrow sneaking up on you. Your task? Take an epic photo from the very end of the pier. We need you to snap a photo that proves you’ve braved the brink — whether it’s an epic sunrise selfie, a windswept group shot, or your best ‘King of the World’ pose. It’s all about giving in to pier pressure and living life on the edge, literally!

Need some extra companionship on your team while you hunt? We cannot have pets in the beach house but you can visit the Dare County Animal Shelter and participate in their Voluntourism program! You can go and play with their animals, take them on a walk, give them a bath or read at their reading corner. If you want 10 bonus points, and an awesome temporary teammate, ask about their special Foster for a Day (Voluntourism edition) where you take a dog for a day ride and visit all the dog friendly places. We love a good yard game at The Bluebird, but with limited lawn space at the beach house, we’ve got a challenge for you that’s as classy as it is competitive. Your mission is to find a public lawn at one of the Outer Banks’ historic sites and film a refined game of croquet. We recommend you get permission, but hey, this is croquet — what could possibly go wrong? You certainly don't need to wear dapper outfits or use exaggerated British accents, but it might be fun. Just remember to keep a straight face while sending your opponent’s ball into oblivion. May the most distinguished team win!

Item 37 - A Hunt for Thoughts and Tabs

Create at least one MISSING flyer for a “LOST TRAIN OF THOUGHT” with at least 15 tear-off tabs at the bottom; on each tab should be your team name and a single, repeated word — it can be a verb, noun, conjunction — you get the idea. Post your flyer in a public spot within Kill Devil Hills and post the location of your flyer(s) on the Bluebird at the Beach bulletin board by 8pm Tuesday AND social media tagged #BxbLostTrainOfThought, then search for other teams’ flyers and collect at least 3 tear-off tabs from 3 different flyers (don’t take more than one tab off any flyer you find and don’t tear a tab of your own team’s flyer). Arrange the pieces you’ve collected into a short statement or short collaborative poem, which you should submit as an image. The more unique tabs you collect from different flyers, the higher the points you’ll receive. 5 bonus points for each tab used beyond 3.

You've probably heard of the reality TV show Shark Tank where entrepreneurs make business presentations to a panel of venture capitalists. That doesn't sound very exciting so we want your team to dive into the most intense pitch of your lives on Shark Tank: NC Aquarium Edition! In front of a live audience of actual sharks in the Graveyard of the Atlantic exhibit at the aquarium, your team must pitch the next big fishy business. Whether it’s a revolutionary product for fish, an underwater restaurant concept, or the latest in oceanic fashion, your goal is to convince the sharks that your idea is worth their investment (or at least a good laugh!). Dress the part, bring props, and convince the underwater titans to bite on your fintastic pitch. Extra points if you can keep a straight face while the sharks silently judge your concept and the aquarium staff wonder what on earth you’re up to! Will you swim away with an offer, or will your idea sink to the bottom? Only the sharks know for sure!

Whether it’s chocolatey, fruity, or mysteriously sweet, your dessert haggis should be a showstopper. Record a 60-second video of your team in action, complete with dramatic narration and the enthusiasm of a Michelin-starred chef. Don’t forget to sell us on why dessert haggis is the next big thing! Step back in time and experience life as an Outer Banker in the 1850s, where daily tasks like feeding chickens, fishing the sounds, and — most importantly — growing corn were all part of a historic adventure! At Island Farm, generations of islanders braved the Civil War, helped the Wright Brothers achieve flight, and performed heroic rescues as members of the US Life-Saving Service. Your task is to take a picture of your team in front of the farm’s iconic windmill, with each team member proudly holding an ear of corn. Channel your inner 19th-century farmer while you do it. Get corny with it!

If you do hike to the Ridge Top of Jockey's Ridge, you may see a number of people hang gliding. Your Cruise Directors are big fans of Kitty Hawk Kites for their awesome kites, windsocks, and t-shirts. But the location in Nags Head also houses their Hang Gliding Training Center which we were surprised to learn is the largest hang gliding school in the world. Since 1974 they have taught over 400,000 students from ages 4 to 92. Find an adventurous person on your team because to complete this task, you need a video of at least one of your members in the air on a hang glider.

Item 57 - Hidden Clues and Secret Messages

Letterboxing (http://www.letterboxing.org/) is a game where people hide small weatherproof boxes in publicly accessible spaces with a logbook & a stamp. They share the clues to find their box on the web or via word of mouth. Create a letterbox for your team & share clues so other teams can find it over social media. Leave a logbook with your team stamp on it in the box. Then, find another teams’ box and leave them a message of encouragement along with your team’s stamp in their log book. Take a picture of the whole thing, proof that you found at least one other team’s book & the message you wrote. NO COLLUSION! (And that goes for you, too, Donald.) 

NOTE: Letterboxes should be placed and communicated by 10am Wednesday morning and be located within 15 miles of the beach house.

November is the best month to witness the breathtaking beauty of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, where the skies and waters come alive with migratory birds. Your mission is to take a team photo from the observation deck along the North Pond Trail, surrounded by the stunning marshes, maritime shrubs, and the endless expanse of Pamlico Sound. This time of year, tens of thousands of waterfowl — snow geese, tundra swans, and countless others — fill the impoundments, creating a magnificent sight and sound as they migrate. USFW says more than 400 species of birds are a regular part of the site’s ecosystem, and that doesn’t include the 50 or 60 species of birds that accidentally show up or are very rare. Capture your team in this picturesque setting, with great egrets and blue herons as your likely photo-bombers. And if you're lucky, maybe you'll catch a rare species passing through!

Item 61 - The Last Full Measure of Devotion  👨‍👨👨‍👨

While out patrolling for German submarines off the North Carolina coast during World War II, the British ship HMT Bedfordshire was torpedoed on May 11, 1942 . German U-boat 558 fired a torpedo that struck HMT Bedfordshire in a manner that caused the vessel to sink almost immediately. All 37 British Royal Navy sailors were killed. In the following days, the bodies of four sailors washed ashore on Ocracoke Island and, though far from home, they were given a proper burial in a small plot of land donated by Ocracokers, which flies the national flag of the United Kingdom and is recognized as being "forever England." Every year, the National Park Service, the US Coast Guard, and the British Royal Navy have a ceremony at the site.  We would like you to take a photo of your team paying your respects to honor the men who lost their lives in the attacks.

You must be in a lake, pond, river, sound, or ocean. NOT in a swimming pool. They must take at least 6 steps. No stilts in the water. No super shallow water.

Well, space pirates actually (no, seriously, you can look it up). Well, we are pretty sure that his fears are well-founded. Let’s prove it to him: Show us your team as space pirates in action. Your challenge: get at least one team member to brave the steady winds and rolling waves to capture a video of their epic windsurfing adventure. Whether they glide gracefully across the water or spend more time in it than on it, we want to see every glorious moment. From the first Algonquian-speaking people to the first English colonies, from formerly enslaved people starting anew to an inventor testing new radio technology, Roanoke Island continues to be a place to forge new paths. It was here that Virginia Dare, born 18 August 1587, became the first English child born in an American English colony. What became of Virginia and the other colonists remains a mystery. But what you can find is a monument to Virginia Dare and the "Lost Colony" settlers. Seek out this monument and take a picture of it with your team.
