The current Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is a replica, built in 2004, of the third lighthouse to carry that same name. It was originally constructed in 1877 on the southern end of the Croatan Sound in the village of Wanchese on Roanoke Island. The screw-pile lighthouse is filled with educational and historical exhibits, including a Fresnel lens dating back to the 1800s loaned to the Town of Manteo by the US Coast Guard. This little lighthouse may be small in stature but it is a big part of the local maritime history. Take a picture of your team in front of the lighthouse.

Item 3 - The Lighthouse that Didn't Fall Over (Finally!)  👨‍👨👨‍👨

They said it was daft for a guy with no lighthouse experience to build the first Bodie Island Light Station. But in 1847, he built it all the same, just to show them.  It fell over and sank into the sound. So in 1859, they built a second one. This one was blown up by retreating Confederates in 1861, fell over, and sank into the sound. But the third one, built in 1871, stayed up. And that's what you're visiting lad, the strongest lighthouse in these parts. Take a picture of your team in front of the lighthouse. But do it quickly, because you never know.

Item 4 - Brick by Brick Currituck Climb Challenge  👨‍👨👨‍👨

First lit on December 1, 1875, the beacon from the Currituck Beach Lighthouse filled the remaining “dark spot” on the North Carolina coast between Cape Henry and Bodie Island lighthouses. It is one of the only lighthouses in America that still houses its original first-order Fresnel lens whose light continues to flash today at 20-second intervals, serving as a navigational aid. It is also the only lighthouse on the Outer Banks to be unpainted, making it easy to see the one million bricks required for its construction. Snap a photo of your team in front of this epic brick landmark. For those feeling adventurous, climb to the top for an incredible view and 10 bonus points — just make sure at least three team members make it to the summit!

Item 5 - Towering Beacon of the Graveyard  👨‍👨👨‍👨

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse protects one of the most hazardous sections of the Atlantic Coast. Hundreds and possibly thousands of shipwrecks in this area have given it the reputation as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The current lighthouse was first lit on December 16, 1870 and at 198 feet is still the tallest brick lighthouse in the world. In 1999, due to extensive shoreline erosion, the Cape Hatteras Light Station was successfully relocated 2,900 feet from the spot on which it had stood since 1870 in one of the most impressive engineering feats of the modern era. Gather your team and capture an epic photo in front of this historic lighthouse, which continues to stand tall as a symbol of resilience and safety along the Outer Banks.

The Ocracoke Island Lighthouse may not be the most imposing of the Outer Banks lighthouses, but as North Carolina's oldest lighthouse in operation (and the second oldest in the United States), it is certainly one of the most beloved. At just 65' ft. tall, it is by far the smallest of the true lighthouses on the Outer Banks, but it still towers over the 4 square miles of Ocracoke Village, and its beacon can be spotted up to 14 miles into the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Gather your crew and snap an epic team photo in front of this iconic lighthouse — because even the tiniest beacon can light the way to big adventures!

For more than two centuries, lighthouses have guarded the Outer Banks coast and always guided the way. Generations of seaborne travelers and mariners have sought the comfort of these beacons' reassuring light as they navigated the perilous channels and shoals that mark the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Perhaps that is why these sentinels, among the tallest in America, have come to serve as beacons of hope and inspiration. If you show your love by visiting all five lighthouses, with pictures of your team in front of each, you earn an additional 15 points on top of the points you earned from visiting them individually

So for this one, we're asking you to perform the same task from Item 8 (Sipping & Shrimping) but to do it at your Cruise Directors' favorite spot for it: Smacnally's Waterfront Bar & Grill with its open-air seating overlooking Silver Lake in beautiful Ocracoke. It's a five-hour roundtrip drive and requires the Hatteras ferry, but it's so worth it.

Tucked away on Ocracoke's Back Road is a hidden gem where you can indulge in a little island luxury at Zillie’s Island Pantry, the village's own treasure trove of fine wines, craft beers, microbrews, gourmet cheeses, chocolates, and all the snacks you didn’t know you needed. There's even a case of premium cigars. When your Cruise Directors stay in Ocracoke, this place is one of their first stops to get us into that island spirit. One of the best activities is to grab some snacks and beverages inside and then come out on the "Wine & WiFi Deck" to enjoy them while you watch the world go by. Gather up your team and take a picture of this island ritual that will surely make your Cruise Directors green with envy!

Well ... drat! It turns out that proper tea parties in The Elizabethan Gardens at Manteo require a reservation three weeks ahead of time so you've missed that opportunity. But who needs reservations when you have stealth and a sense of adventure? Your mission: conduct an actual tea party amidst the garden’s lush greenery — complete with actual tea and snacks — but here’s the catch: you’ve got to do it on the down-low. Set up your clandestine feast in the most charming spot in the gardens you can find, and take a photo of your team enjoying tea and finger foods like sneaky nobles on the run. We're looking for extra elegance, silent pinky-raising, and managing to look as inconspicuous as possible while sipping your tea in broad daylight. Just remember, in the world of stealth tea, it’s all about style, subtlety, and having absolutely no reservations!

Springer's Point, once home to wild pirate parties, is now a peaceful nature preserve where visitors can trod along wooded trails to the soundfront, which overlooks the infamous Teach's Hole, the name for the waters where Blackbeard met his demise. This land is calling for your crew to step back in time and embrace your inner buccaneers. Your mission? Dress up as the fiercest (or silliest) pirates this side of the Outer Banks and take an ‘artistic’ group photo amongst the natural beauty of Springer's Point with the infamous waters of Teach's Hole behind you. Capture the majesty of the of the natural splendor while striking a pose worthy of a pirate legend. Your photo should make Blackbeard himself tip his hat and say, ‘Arrr, now that's a crew worthy of the high seas!’ Don’t forget: creativity and pirate swagger are key!

Now, your final task is to seek out the illustrious monument that marks the eastern terminus of the epic Mountains-to-Sea Trail. It’s hidden in plain sight, a beacon for weary travelers (and teams in search of glory). Once you’ve located this grand finish line, gather your crew for a victorious photo. You should look as if you’ve actually hiked all 1,175 miles, complete with dramatic exhaustion and triumphant poses. You’ve made it to the end of the road ... or at least the end of the trail, and that’s worth celebrating!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: find an OBX restaurant with a classic menu board, work your charm, and convince the staff to rearrange the letters on one line to read ‘BXBOBX Combo’ and whatever price works with their setup. Whether they think it’s a secret menu item or the latest hot deal, it’s up to you to make it happen! Capture the glorious result in a photo and remember that we'll be looking for creativity, smooth talking, and not getting banned from the restaurant. After all, the BXBOBX Combo is a once-in-a-lifetime (or never-in-a-lifetime) special! I will just point out that the letter kits that came with the menu boards usually only came with one 'X' so ... what will you do?

Item 16 - One Play to Rule Them All

We want you to go to the theater on the 2nd floor and recreate the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in just one unedited minute and with only four actors. That’s right — Frodo, Gandalf, and all the drama crammed into 60 seconds of pure Middle-earth madness. With only four characters, you’ll need to pull off lightning-fast costume changes, sweeping epic battles, and don’t forget, we must hear the iconic line, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PASS!’ To complete this task, the camera must catch your ‘adoring audience’ in the scene (real or imagined!). So, gather your fellowship, wield your makeshift staffs, and prepare for the fastest journey to Mordor ever attempted. Now go forth and… act really, really fast!

Every post office you find is worth 5 points, so gather your team and start snapping! Possible 65 points total. Rain or shine, your journey through postal history awaits!

Item 18 - The Great Tiny Post Office Hunt

One Post Office you won't find on the list above is the legendary (and adorably tiny) Salvo Post Office — once the second-smallest post office in the nation! Built in 1910, this pint-sized postal wonder has seen more action than most full-sized buildings, getting passed around and moved from postmaster to postmaster like the world's tiniest heirloom until it was decommissioned and Salvo's postal operations were combined with nearby Rodanthe. Your task is to find this 8x12-foot marvel and snap a team photo in front of it, proving that size doesn’t matter when it comes to postal glory. And remember, small packages can still deliver big points!

Your mission? Visit this historic site in Rodanthe and snap a photo that pays homage to these fearless lifesavers. Whether you’re posing by the original station buildings or next to the period rescue equipment, or even the actual surfboat #1046, let your photo capture the spirit of bravery and dedication that defines Chicamacomico.

Item 20 - Get a Glimpse Beyond This Illusion

The recorder is an under-appreciated instrument, with roots in ancient times. The depth of its mythical sirenic tones are magical and hypnotic. So what better place to play this divine woodwind than amongst the most beautiful sites on the Outer Banks? Take a video of one of your team members playing the chorus of the Kansas song “Carry on Wayward Son” during the golden hour around sunrise or sunset, on a recorder, overlooking one of the attractions listed in the on the Bluebird at the Beach Information Website. If you can get one or two other team members to play with you in unison, we'll give you 5 additional points each (up to 2). Video should cover the entire chorus so is not subject to the normal 20-second limit.

Your task is to gather your team and take a photo of everyone touching the monument at once. Channel the spirit of 18th-century surveyors — tricorn hats optional. Remember, when it comes to history, the closer the connection, the better. So get hands-on with this historic boundary!

Item 23 - The Outer Banks Mustang Adventure   👨‍👨👨‍👨

To complete this task, your team must track down the true locals of the Outer Banks — the wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs! These majestic creatures have been galloping along these beaches for over 500 years, and now it’s your turn to join them ... at a respectful and law-enforceable distance of at least 50 feet. You’ll find the herds of feral horses at the extreme ends of the Outer Banks. Corolla, to the north has a herd of about 100 stallions while a smaller, more domesticated herd lives on Ocracoke Island. Your mission is snap a photo of your team with these horses behind you. Think you can handle both herds? Do it at both sites and you’ll earn this task twice! Whether you find the free-spirited stallions of Corolla or their laid-back cousins on Ocracoke, your team will be in for a wild adventure. Remember, no lassoing required — just grab a photo and let these feral legends steal the show!

Item 24 - The Outer Banks Flying Mustang Adventure

Time for your team to take flight, well, sort of! Scattered throughout the Outer Banks are the elusive Winged Horses from the 2003 Centennial of Flight celebration. Once, there were 99 of these beauties, but now, only around 30 remain in public — and not all of them still have their beautiful wings! Your mission is to track down these rare winged wonders, snap a photo of your team with each one, and earn 5 points per winged horse. Remember, if it doesn’t have wings, it doesn’t count! And here’s the kicker: the team that corrals the most Winged Horse photos will snag an extra 10 bonus points. So, saddle up, get ready to soar, and may the wind (and wings) be ever in your favor!

Item 25 - The Little Red Mailbox of Hope

Among the hundreds of beach access boardwalks on the Outer Banks, one stands out — not for the view of the ocean, but for what you’ll find before you even reach the shore. Your mission is to discover the weathered red mailbox marked with the admonition to ‘Leave a Note of Hope.’ Perched on a piling near a gazebo, this special mailbox holds a bound journal filled with messages from visitors, spreading hope or seeking it. Snap a picture of your team with this mailbox, and then take a photo of a message of hope you’ve left behind. Whether it’s a wish for loved ones, happiness, or just a bit of sunshine, your words will be part of a beautiful tradition that reminds us all to hold onto hope, especially by the sea.

Item 26 - Celebrating the OG Snowbirds

What few people realize when they spot a pod of dolphins swimming by is that they are likely viewing the same group of dolphins, day after day and year after year. Some bottlenose dolphins will spend their summers in the north and then migrate south to the Outer Banks for the winter only to return again the next year. This migration has led some people to call them the "Retirees of the Sea." Well, we think it's time to throw a beachside bash for these retirees! Your team’s mission is to set up a mini retirement party on the beach as the dolphins cruise by. Capture the festivities on video, with your team raising a toast to these seasoned travelers of the deep. Actual dolphins need to be seen in the video during your festivities. Channel your creativity! After all, these dolphins have earned their relaxation time, and so have you!

One of Hutch's guilty pleasures is watching Wicked Tuna on National Geographic. Think you’ve got what it takes to roll with the big fish of Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks? Head over to the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, the stomping grounds of the legendary Fishin’ Frenzy, where Captain Greg Mayer and his crew have ruled the waves and the leaderboard! Your task: capture a photo at the fishing center that proves you’re ready to join the crew. Your team will earn 5 extra points if you can reel in a shot with the actual Fishin’ Frenzy boat in the frame. Remember, it’s not just about the catch ... it’s about bragging rights! So strike your best ‘I’m the next Wicked Tuna star’ pose!

For this one, we're asking your team to go stand at the edge of the world. Well, not quite, but as close as you can get and still be on the Outer Banks! Pack up your team and head to the end of the Rodanthe Pier, the easternmost point in North Carolina, where you’ll be so far east, you might just spot tomorrow sneaking up on you. Your task? Take an epic photo from the very end of the pier. We need you to snap a photo that proves you’ve braved the brink — whether it’s an epic sunrise selfie, a windswept group shot, or your best ‘King of the World’ pose. It’s all about giving in to pier pressure and living life on the edge, literally!

Estimated to be over 400 years old, the Mother Vine is believed to be the oldest grape vine in all of North America, planted by either Croatan Native Americans or settlers of the Lost Colony. Some have posited that it is the “mother” of all vines for scuppernong grapes, North Carolina’s state fruit. Find this vine and share a picture of your team sharing a glass of wine underneath it. 5 bonus points will be awarded if the wine you share is a bottle of Scuppernong wine and 10 bonus points if it is The Mothervine wine from Duplin winery.

These beauties must be authentic beach finds. No store-bought impostors allowed! But hold onto your sun hats, because we’re not just looking for any old shells! We want shells that could make Neptune himself jealous. So get ready to dig, sift, and maybe even chat up a crab or two for some insider tips. Bonus points will be awarded for the coolest, most unique, and downright Instagram-worthy shells you can find. Think you can make a splash with your shell game? We ‘shore’ hope so!

We want to see you quacking up with laughter.

Head over to the Corolla Grass Course, the only all-natural, ALL-GRASS 20-hole mini-golf course on the Outer Banks, where the turf is as real as your putting skills. Your mission: snap a photo of your team sinking a putt, but don’t forget to throw in a little ‘high’ humor. After all, this course could be where green takes on a whole new meaning! Just remember, the only thing you’re lighting up here are those scorecards … we hope!

Need some extra companionship on your team while you hunt? We cannot have pets in the beach house but you can visit the Dare County Animal Shelter and participate in their Voluntourism program! You can go and play with their animals, take them on a walk, give them a bath or read at their reading corner. If you want 10 bonus points, and an awesome temporary teammate, ask about their special Foster for a Day (Voluntourism edition) where you take a dog for a day ride and visit all the dog friendly places. Legend states that Jockey's Ridge got its name from the practice of the pirate crews of Blackbeard and Kidd who would ride a mare around on the dune’s crest at night with a lantern tied around the horse’s neck. The following day, the locals would walk down to the beach and collect the wares that had washed ashore from the wreck. This is also why the location earned the name Nags Head. Your Cruise Directors are big fans of Kitty Hawk Kites for their awesome kites, windsocks, and t-shirts. But the location in Nags Head also houses their Hang Gliding Training Center which we were surprised to learn is the largest hang gliding school in the world. Since 1974 they have taught over 400,000 students from ages 4 to 92. They share the clues to find their box on the web or via word of mouth. Create a letterbox for your team & share clues so other teams can find it over social media. Leave a logbook with your team stamp on it in the box. Then, find another teams’ box and leave them a message of encouragement along with your team’s stamp in their log book. While out patrolling for German submarines off the North Carolina coast during World War II, the British ship HMT Bedfordshire was torpedoed on May 11, 1942 . German U-boat 558 fired a torpedo that struck HMT Bedfordshire in a manner that caused the vessel to sink almost immediately. All 37 British Royal Navy sailors were killed. In the following days, the bodies of four sailors washed ashore on Ocracoke Island and, though far from home, they were given a proper burial in a small plot of land donated by Ocracokers, which flies the national flag of the United Kingdom and is recognized as being "forever England." Every year, the National Park Service, the US Coast Guard, and the British Royal Navy have a ceremony at the site.  We would like you to take a photo of your team paying your respects to honor the men who lost their lives in the attacks.
